So, does creatine increase weight? It certainly can. However, it does not necessarily equate to an increase in body fat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creatine draws water into the muscles. After some time, creatine may aid muscle growth. What follows are explanations of the added weight, how quickly one can expect to notice it, whether it can or needs to be addressed, and how.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creatine can increase weight. When people do a creatine loading phase, they can typically gain around 1-3 kg in a week, give or take. The reason for the early added weight is the water being held in the muscles. Eventually, after adding resistance training, some of the added weight can be attributed to lean muscle gain. Creatine does not add fat. Stopping the loading phase eventually leads to the loss of excess water. There aren&#8217;t really any dietary calories in a 3-5 g serving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_Creatine_Weight_Gain_Fat_Water_or_Muscle\"><\/span><strong>Is Creatine Weight Gain Fat, Water, or Muscle?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer can probably be more accurately described as water and muscle; it would most likely not be fat caused by creatine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is important to distinguish between the three because they can all add weight to a person. However, they mean very different things for body composition and fitness overall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Water Weight Causes the Early Increase<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most weight fluctuations experienced by users of creatine supplements can be attributed to creatine\u2019s tendency to hold water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creatine helps the body maintain phosphocreatine stores. Phosphocreatine helps the body rapidly produce ATP, which is used to generate energy for intense, brief activities, including lifting, running, and jumping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you have more muscle creatine, you can also have more water in your muscles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/jissn.biomedcentral.com\/counter\/pdf\/10.1186\/s12970-021-00412-w.pdf\">2021 study published<\/a> in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition reported that during a loading phase, a typical increase in body mass of approximately 1\u20133 kg is attributed to an increase in body water within 5-7 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just because water is retained by body tissues does not mean it is there permanently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Studies suggest that creatine-related water retention occurs in the muscle tissue. One creatine supplement study reported increases in body mass and total body water without a shift in fluid distribution between the intracellular and extracellular compartments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another study with young adults (16 to 30) stated that total body water increased by about 2% after the creatine supplementation period. This could potentially give the illusion of an increase in fat-free mass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Weight scans make this apparent. It is important to note that \u201ccreatine\u201d loading has no real effect on increasing muscle mass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Increased muscle mass temporarily retains water, resulting in larger, fuller muscles, which is not a negative effect, especially for someone attempting to gain muscle. These changes are not the same for everyone. Your starting creatine levels, diet, muscle mass, dose, and loading strategy impact the differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Muscle Gain Can Add Weight Over Time<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second form of creatine weight gain also occurs more gradually. It is due to lean tissue growth through training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creatine, unlike what some believe, does not grow muscle while you sit on the couch. Rather, it supports the energy system used in the most demanding muscular exercises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This system also aids repeated bouts of high-intensity effort. Over time, with consistent effort, training adaptations will result in improved training quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The International Society of Sports Nutrition considers creatine monohydrate a great addition to training for increasing lean body mass and improving high-intensity training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can later lead to weight gain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If gaining muscle is your goal, then the fact that the scale weight will increase from creatine use is a good indicator. For example, if creatine use resulted in a 1 kg gain, it is reasonable to believe that the mass gained is a combination of water and muscle. If training does not cease for several more months, the gain could be predominantly new muscle tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not expect the weight you gain to be exclusively new muscle tissue, however. To gain more muscle, you need to do resistance training. This is in addition to adequate overall protein intake, sufficient energy, recovery, and time. Creatine supports this process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is also worth clarifying something people often say. &#8216;Muscle weighs more than fat&#8217; is false. A kilogram of muscle and a kilogram of fat obviously weigh the same. Being compact, muscle weighs less than fat. For this reason, body composition can improve, even while body weight stays the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scales should not be the only way to evaluate progress at the gym. More context includes strength, measurements, photos, workouts, sets and reps, and body composition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Creatine Does Not Directly Make You Fat<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fear behind &#8220;Does creatine make you fat?&#8221; is understandable. Looking in the mirror, someone gains weight on creatine and thinks they have got fatter. From the research we have, that is unlikely. For example, in one clinical study, active males who took creatine gained an average of 1.7 kg and showed an increase in body water. Researchers found no change in body fat percentage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results of longer studies suggest the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7871530\/\">One large meta-analysis of studies<\/a> (ranging in length from one week to two years) does not find that creatine increases fat mass. One study analysed reports from 19 studies involving 609 participants. The creatine group lost, on average, 0.5 kg more fat mass than the placebo group, though this difference was not significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That does not mean creatine is a fat burner. What this means is that creatine weight gain is not fat gain. Creatine monohydrate, on its own, is not a high-energy food. Still, the weight gain from creatine monohydrate might not be body fat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you begin taking creatine while significantly increasing calories to bulk, you will likely gain some fat. This increase in fat will be a result of the surplus calories you eat, and not creatine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Much_Weight_Can_You_Gain_on_Creatine_and_How_Fast\"><\/span><strong>How Much Weight Can You Gain on Creatine and How Fast?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no exact number that applies to everyone. Your <strong>creatine weight gain<\/strong> depends partly on how you take it. The biggest difference comes from whether you use a loading phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A traditional <strong>creatine loading phase<\/strong> uses about <strong>20\u201325 g daily for 5\u20137 days<\/strong>, usually divided into several smaller servings. Another approach uses approximately 0.3 g per kilogram of body weight daily during loading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After that, users generally move to a lower daily maintenance intake. Loading fills muscle creatine stores more quickly. A person with greater muscle mass may store more creatine. Someone who already eats plenty of creatine-rich foods may respond differently from someone with lower starting muscle creatine stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most important point is this: <strong>A fast increase in the first week is far more likely to be water than newly gained fat.<\/strong> Fat gain does not normally appear suddenly without a corresponding sustained calorie surplus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_Creatine_Weight_Gain_Permanent_Does_It_Go_Away\"><\/span><strong>Is Creatine Weight Gain Permanent? Does It Go Away?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer depends on which type of weight you gained. <strong>Water-related creatine weight gain is usually temporary. Muscle gained during training is a different story.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you stop taking creatine, the extra creatine stored in your muscles gradually falls. A landmark study found that muscle creatine levels returned to pre-supplementation levels around <strong>30 days after supplementation stopped<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another trial found that elevated muscle creatine remained two weeks after supplementation but was no longer significantly elevated four weeks later. As those stores fall, some associated water weight may also disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You might therefore see your scale weight decrease over several weeks after stopping creatine. That does not mean you suddenly lost all your muscle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Muscle tissue developed through months of resistance training does not vanish because you stopped using a supplement. You could notice slightly less muscle fullness. Consider your trend over several weeks rather than a single morning. Body weight naturally fluctuates due to hydration, sodium intake, carbohydrate intake, bowel contents, sleep, menstrual cycle changes, and many other factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Reduce_Creatine_Water_Retention_and_Bloating\"><\/span><strong>How to Reduce Creatine Water Retention and Bloating<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For most healthy adults, some early water retention is an expected response rather than something that needs to be &#8220;fixed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, <strong>creatine bloating<\/strong> can bother some people. Two different things are often described as bloating. The first is muscle water gain. This can make muscles look fuller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second is digestive discomfort. This may happen when very large creatine servings are taken at once. That makes it harder to tell what creatine is doing. Try to keep your normal diet reasonably consistent during the first couple of weeks. Creatinine is commonly measured when doctors assess kidney function. Creatine naturally breaks down into creatinine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, a modest change in blood creatinine does not automatically mean kidney damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/42035842\/\"><strong>2026 systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials<\/strong><\/a> found that creatine supplementation increased serum creatinine by an average of <strong>0.13 mg\/dL<\/strong>. However, researchers found no significant differences in urea or estimated GFR between the creatine and control groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/content\/pdf\/10.1007\/s11255-026-05287-x.pdf\">Another large 2026 analysis<\/a> included <strong>26 studies and 1,036 participants<\/strong>. It reported changes in creatinine-based kidney estimates but no significant difference when kidney filtration was assessed using Cr-EDTA, a method less affected by creatinine metabolism. The authors concluded that the changes were likely related to creatinine metabolism rather than kidney injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not mean everyone should take creatine without medical guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speak with a doctor before using it if you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have kidney disease or reduced kidney function.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have another medical condition affecting fluid or electrolyte balance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take medicines that may affect kidney function.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are pregnant or breastfeeding.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have been specifically advised to limit supplements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Receive abnormal kidney test results.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, tell your doctor that you use creatine before kidney function testing. It provides important context for interpreting serum creatinine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Does_Creatine_Cause_Hair_Loss\"><\/span><strong>Does Creatine Cause Hair Loss?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This concern has circulated for years. Until recently, there was very little direct research measuring hair itself. A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/40265319\/\"><strong>2025 randomised controlled trial<\/strong><\/a> finally examined the question directly. Researchers recruited <strong>45 resistance-trained men aged 18\u201340<\/strong>. Participants received either <strong>5 g of creatine monohydrate per day or a placebo for 12 weeks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thirty-eight completed the study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers found no significant differences between groups in DHT, testosterone-related measures, hair density, follicular units, or cumulative hair thickness. One study cannot settle every possible question about hair loss. However, current human evidence does not support saying that normal creatine supplementation causes baldness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Take_Creatine_for_Muscle_and_Performance\"><\/span><strong>How to Take Creatine for Muscle and Performance<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the science is clear, the practical part is fairly simple.
